pioneer

One of the first to settle in a new area

flatboat

A boat with a flat bottom and square ends used to transport freight in shallow waters

 

current

The part of water in a river or stream moving in a certain direction

territory

A region or piece of land that has not yet become a State

 

platted

To plan and map out a section of land

prairie

A type of habitat with mostly grasses; Grasslands in North America

 

commerce

The buying and selling of goods between different places

merchant

A person who buys and sells goods; a business operator or storekeeper

 

Conestoga wagon

A broad-wheeled, covered wagon drawn by a team of horses and used to carry freight.

 

converge

To move toward one point and join together
